Book Now for the Market to Market Program April 4th to 7th 2016
Imagine presenting your film, documentary or idea for a TV series to executives and buyers from around the world. Or, arranging meetings with the decision makers who decide what audiences see at movie theaters, on TV screens or personal devices.
That is what three emerging filmmakers experienced when they attended MIPCOM 2015 October 5-8th in Cannes France – the result of the unique “Market to Market” program created by Media Business Institute (MBI). The program provides young filmmakers unprecedented access to executives who not only buy programming but distribute it worldwide. For emerging filmmakers it is a rare opportunity to meet face to face with buyers who can buy, sell or provide money to produce TV and film projects.
This year, NBC Universal Studios, the Walt Disney Company, The Weinstein Company, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios (MGM), ABC, CBS Studio International, DreamWorks Animation, HBO, Viacom, A&E, Discovery and Netflix were just a few of the companies that attended MIPCOM.
“This is a totally unique program”, Patricia Scarlett, CEO of MBI said at her office in Toronto. “I created Market to Market to overcome the barriers young filmmakers face when trying to sell or produce their project because I know how hard it is to connect with decision makers”. They also receive the 500 page MIPCOM Guide. This exclusive resource provides vital information for following up with key executives when MIPCOM ends.
Before arriving in Cannes, participants in the Market to Market program are required to do research and organize meetings with the companies and executives. “MIPCOM is a huge event”, Patricia said, “Executives from 2,088 companies, 4,500 potential buyers and over 12,000 people will be in attendance. Unless they are prepared, they will be overwhelmed by the size and complexity of the event. I make sure they are thoroughly prepared so they get the most from the experience and achieve their goals.”
When they arrive in Cannes, each participant in the Market to Market program receives an orientation. This involves a tour through the “Palais des Festivals”, the same building that houses the Cannes Film Festival. “The building is huge”, Patricia stated, “with over 24,100 square meters or 259,410 square feet of space spread over multiple levels. I show them how to find the companies they have arranged to visit and where the VIP area is located.”
The MIPCOM experience also includes presentations, screenings and exhibits. According to Robin Welch, Chair of the MBI International Advisory Board, there is a unique opportunity to see how emerging technology and trends affect the broadcast industry. “Where else can you see presentations by the top executives from CBS and Showtime on content trends and how these companies are coping with the emergence of free internet content?”
This year, there was a special premiere screening of the new X Files TV series. To attend this special event, as well as the presentations and panel discussions, you require full accreditation. “Every participant in the Market to Market program receives full conference accreditation so they can attend all of the events, industry parties, screenings and panel discussions. It is a rare opportunity to see how the TV and Media Industry operate, and how decisions are made”, Patricia concluded.
Filmmakers who take advantage of the Market to Market program also enjoy the following benefits:
- Welcome reception and VIP access to the MIPCOM official party.
- Free welcome basket filled with items to make the festival experience enjoyable.
- A pre-booked hotel room or accommodation in a high end apartment a few minutes walking distance from the Palais des Festival.
